Actually they are better for off-road.

The to-buy or not to-buy consideration for off-roading is not that the more dirty environment will let that much more of the micro particals into the engine. The main consideration is that the filters are cleanable. I dirty one up in one weekend event and am financially glad I can just clean it on Monday and be good to go again.
