Headlamp aiming Joe Levy [NY] [2K CPR SLT 5.9L 3.92 PT4WD]

I recently installed GE 9007HO bulbs to replace the stanrd 9007's. Now it appears that, although brighter, they're aimed further down than the old bulbs were.
So, the question is - is there a specific orientation that the bulb must be in the socket? There are three cut-outs in the socket where the three tangs from the bulb must go through in order to tighten the clamping ring. Was I wrong just putting them where I could or does the bulb need to be positioned properly (flat side up for example).
I'll play with it more tonight, but just wanted some direction.
