violent downshift 2001 slt pt 4wd/dip stick

I've noticed, on three occassions now-- when I am in slow moving traffic the transmission goes (slams) from third to first, the first time it happened it scared the %$#@! out of me. Is this the subject of a recall or service bulletin? Also what can I expect from my (no star)dealer? (I purchased from a 5* out of state)
Also when I checked my motor oil, the dipstck was just at the beginning of the "add" line and after I added a quart is now just past the "safe" line. I note that the oil pressure gauge is usually on the high side at anything over 2000 rpm. Have I (gasp!) overfilled it?!
