and the backup wire is because...

there is apparently some rule about not dimming the mirror when the car is in reverse.. I guess so the people who are usig teir mirror to back up can see better..

Of course, if you're backing up into someone's high beams - which are causing the mirror to dim - you probably have bigger problems to worry about.. 8-)
