Why is the traction better on the D?

I've seen quite a few posts about the D having better traction than Ford, Chevy etc.. I'm not disputing this claim but I have a question. Does anyone know why the traction is better? Is it the overall design? Is it the 4x4 design? Any ideas?

I live in Tucson, AZ so I don't see snow very often. I'm still waiting for a big storm to drop some snow on Mt. Lemmon. Sometimes they only allow 4x4 up the mountain after a good snow storm. When that happens I'll be going up.
