Well, for starters, the D weighs more than either of its "counterparts" - the Exploder and the Blazer/Jimmy. And, it's nimbler than the bigger guys like the Expedition, Excursion, and Suburban/Yukon XL. Probably more so than the Tahoe/Yukon as well.
Add to that the antislip differential, wider tires (31X10.5X15 is bigger than the other guys std tires), great powerplants, and wider stance, and you get a superior performing vehicle in all kinds of conditions.
That's my take on it, but up here in Northeast Suburbia, we're all used to snow and slick road conditions, so I haven't seen any 4WD in serious difficuty (so far).
