That way is okay, except at Independence Pass (I-70). It closes often when it snows, unless you have chains & a 4X4. Also, be warned, If you have to stop in Denver, STAY out of the Standard station (1st exit into Denver) They're a bunch of rip-offs, and they don't like people from IL for some reason. Actually, they probably treat every out of stater like that. So, if your going that way, around Denver is where you'll have any real problems.
