I wouldn't worry about chains. If the chain law is in effect on I-70, that means chains for trucks and snow tires for cars and SUVs. Snow tires or all terrain tires on a four-wheel drive SUV will get you up the hill better than chains on a two-wheel drive car. They will provide plenty of traction until they close the road due to accidents or avalanches. If you have street tires on your D, you will need chains if the chain law goes into effect, even with four wheel drive.

I-76 and I-70 is more likely to be closed East of Denver to the state line. I know a woman who has gone sking every weekend for years with no problems. She is currently driving a Honda Prelude with street tires and no chains. Of course you could get stuck between the Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail pass for a couple of days until they get the avalanches plowed out. Take standard Illinois winter driving precautions; warm clothes, extra food and fluids, shovel, tow strap, blankets, full fuel tank, candles, a credit card for Vail, etc.

If the roads and weather are good, you could go over Loveland Pass for a real winter driving experience.

Good Luck
