I've been running a K&N replacement air filter since I took delivery of my D in June '99 but have wanted to replace the factory airbox for quite some time. But I didn't want to go with an open-air element. I had an open-air element on my '95 Mustang GT 5.0 and experienced some driveability problems in hot weather, largely because of fan wash and sizzling underhood temperatures. The Gen II FIPK has a heat shield which should help isolate the filter from fan wash and some of the under-hood heat.
I considered the Kenne-Bell unit, but with the on-line coupon, the K&N was cheaper. The Gen II FIPK has a nice black ABS plastic intake tube which is smooth and shaped to eliminate resistance. It replaces the "hat" on top of the throttle body, too. I realize that some folks on the forum had trouble with the Gen II FIPK rubbing on the hood insulation. We'll see if K&N corrected that flaw.
Now, if only UPS would hurry up and get here!
Take it easy.
