had both exact problems

The dealer evacuated my A/C and refilled it. It was 1/2 pound low. That did make it some better but not where I'd like it to be. My 2000 D is white so that helps somewhat. I think the air in a lot of Durangos is weak. We are having a heat wave here in the West and the A/C is just keeping up. Fortunately, the humididty is low. Have the dealer check yours and ask them to measure your vent temp outside the shop in real heat conditions.

The dealer couldn't find the cause of my dash rattle. It was always worse in the morning when the temp was cooler. By the time they got around to looking at it everything had warmed up and the rattle was faint. After two trips to the shop I took matters into my own hands. I took off the right dash A/C vent cover and using a long skinny screw driver, stuffed a bunch of soft foam down between the the right side of the vent and the dash opening. I could never get into that area to see the exact cause but my fix worked. I didn't put any foam down inside the dash on the left side of the vent for fear of screwing up the air bag system.
