Yup, read the manual. The D only has one AC compressor and it only runs when the front climate controls are set to one of the AC positions. The rotary switch on the rear AC unit really only controls the rear fan. It is a "cool only" unit.

Alos, the compressor can only pump so much heat, so if you run the rear AC you are using some of the compressors power there and getting less up front.
