Problem with front end?

I have noticed a greasy, black subtance on the front 15" alloys of our 2000 D after use. It looks and feels like bearing grease and flung out from the center. It shows mostly on the right side, but I see it on the left, too. It does clean off in the car wash.
I had occasion to drive in 4WDhigh through a very nasty rain and wind storm the other day, and felt the right side binding on a couple of low speed right turns. It stopped after shifting out to 2WD.
It this normal? The D is going in for it's first service (%403000M) this week.
