My 2000 D R/T "skips/hops" quite a bit during bumpy road curves. Is this normal?

This usually happens more noticably at speeds over 25 miles an hour, and also when the curves are sharper and the road bumps high or more numerous. Also, on landing, my D sways a large amount. What bothers me is that when I travelled many of these curves in my van, my van did not react in this way, and I actually felt more secure in it than in my D.
I attribute this skip/hop to the suspension allowing the wheel to remain off of the ground for too long, where when the wheel does finally contact the road again, my D has actually moved sidewards (during the curve), and the sidewards momentum causes the noticable sway in the D. Along with the unwanted movement, my worry is in the loss of control in the vehicle that this may cause, especially if the speeds are higher, or if the road conditions are slippery. Is is very much like running on your feet through a curve and then jumping, we all know what happens when you land, you tend to slide in a straight line away from your intended radius line). Call me silly, but if I steer my D in a certain direction, I want to keep going that way.
Anyone else experience this handling phenomenon? Any does anyone have any insights on what to do about it (better shocks perhaps). I only have 1000 miles (1600 km) on my D.
