The book shows a towing capacity of 4700 lbs for a 4X2 and 4400 for the 4X4. The gross combined weight rating for your set up is 9,200 lbs. That's the total weight of your D, everything inside including passaengers plus the trailer weight and it's contents and is the more appropriate weight to work with. Check your owners manual for specific information on your D. There is NO cushion built into the towing numbers given out by ANy of the big 3 auto makers. Exceeding the numbers listed can not only void your warranty but cause damage to your vehicle. Towing capacity is made up of a number of factors. Engine HP/torque, transmission, suspension, brakes, etc. all come into play when towing and modifying only one of those parameters doesn't mean the vehicle is cpable of towing beyond it's capacity. Sounds like the figure you've been told is not accurate. Sorry about the bad news here. :-(
