I find it easier to just turn the engine off to shift in or out of low range, otherwise you have to wait for the entire gear train to stop motion after shifting to neutral, if you don't wait long enough, you'll grind a pound! The auto trans doesn't work as well for the range mode change as a manual. My XJ had the same t-case(not HD tho)but a 5 speed manual and I never had as much trouble making the change.
