I made a similar trip this past weekend with my family of 5. I have a travel trailer for most trips, but we were not taking it on this one. I bought a steel rack that goes into my trailer hitch receiver. It will hold up to 500lbs. I already hade a large vinyl tub we use for camping. We stuffed the tub and strapped it to the rack in back of the truck.
I really liked the solution and it only put me back $50. I will use it for short day trips to carry bikes as well as equipment for Little League and games.
The clam shell carriers can be bought for $50 to $100. My solution hold just as much stuff and has much better access.
