AWD is the same as full-time mode, when power is driving all 4 wheels, to make this feasible so one won't have excessive tire wear, tranny strain, another clutch is employed in between the front wheels and rear wheels, so hence the front wheels may turn at different speed vs rear (happens when turning).

Part-time mode 4wd is when the front and rear wheels are "locked" and turn basically at the same speed .This is the most common type of 4wd available for most vehicles and can only be used on slippery terrain or else one will experience severe tire wear and can damage tranny if driven on regular rough terrain.

Full-time 4wd (AWD) is the best to get and well worth the extra $$$.
