As a tech at Reed Bros. Dodge in Rockville MD., let me clear the issue. Almost every rear wheel drive car ever made has the steering box mounted ahead of the front wheels and axle, just like the D. If you take a closer look at the steering shaft, you will find that there is a slip joint in the stering column. This allows the column to compress about 6" upon impact, much like a teleoscoping parascope. There is also a teleoscoping section in the steering column under the dash panel. If all of this doesn't make you feel beter, remember that a strong-ass frame and a 4,500lb curb weight will always be your best protection when some dip-shit pulls out in front of you. Until next time, happy D'ing in your D!
