Question for motorheads...

I've been trying to get an answer to this question and got directed to several places to no avail so I'm turning to the SOURCE again. I am aware of the difference between torque and horsepower, BUT why is it that peak torque and peak horsepower do NOT occur at the same point on the rpm graph? What is there about engine configuration that causes the two to be at different points on the graph? I've tried physics teachers, the vette net, Parts Mike and a few other places and all I get is we don't know the answer. Somebody out here must know. Thanks!
